I am not sure if my artistic sensibilities are starting to fail me or the new UST logo is just plainly untasteful. While browsing through Facebook, I saw a community page of almost 8,000 likes named “No to UST's new university seal”.My initial reaction was, Our school has a new logo?!
Out of curiosity on the “new” logo, I checked the Facebook page and all I saw was… uhm, an untastefully altered old logo placed in the center of a plain black and yellow circle bearing the words “University of Santo Tomas Manila 1611” on it. Aesthetically speaking, it looked so cheaply and haphazardly done. Even the font style, which actually spelled jeje, is surely not commensurate to the grandness of a 400 year old university.
Can I just say that we have a good supply of Thomasian artists from the College of Fine Arts and Design (CFAD) and other amateur graphic artists from the different colleges of who I am certain could do more appealing logos. Why haven’t the UST administration just organized a logo design contest? I’m sure a pool of excellent works will be gathered from it.
This also brings the issue on whether we even need a new logo. The previous one is already good as it is. Changing it would be like changing the Philippine flag, stripping the logo its historic and sentimental value. I can’t think of any reason for the sudden change.
A Tumblr user even posted a letter dated June 21,2011 from the Office of the Secretary General addressed to the Deans, Regents, Principals and Heads of departments . Here's a copy:

I am not aware if any public consultation with the students and alumni was made। I believe students and alumni should also be equal stakeholders in this decision and should not rest solely from the Council of Regents. The UST is such a beautiful institution with its rich culture and tradition, it doesn’t deserve anything less for its seal.
ok naman ang logo ng alma mater natin.. hehehe
ReplyDeletemaganda.. at least may name na.
I find the new one alright, pero the original is better, considering the shape. Pwedeng pang-flag yung orig, while pwedeng pang-button yung bago.
ReplyDeleteagree! haha parang button pin lang
DeleteThomasian ka rin pala kuya!hehe
ReplyDeleteAng sakit kasi sa mata eh.
@will - sobrang layo naman ng pang-flag at pang button pin diba?
ReplyDeleteJologs nung bagong logo ng UST! Makaboto nga dun sa no to new UST logo.
ReplyDeleteit doesn't look good...
ReplyDelete@mugen - tara kuya magrally na tayo sa UST, padala ka complaint sa Office for Alumni Relations! :)
ReplyDelete@pinoy a. - oo nga :/
I agree. I think if they're going to put the logo inside a circle and wanted to rebrand it, dapat inalis na nila yung square border, made the inner circle blue and put the emblem there.
ReplyDeleteThe whole thing looks off. Mga admin talaga.
true. Pero dapat wag na lagyan ng bilog. The square border symbolizes the four corners of the university kaya dapat alisin na lang yung bilog at iretain yung square logo. Pano kaya kung square na lang logo instead of circle right?
DeleteThe FONT! It doesn't look like an educational institution. Wag natin sabayan ang ibang school na ginagawang hip ang logo to be recognized. UST is classy and that is our distinction. Para kasing logo ng motor yung bagong logo. Mas elegant yung logo with the name circled around it. Plain White, no colors around it. Ano meaning nung bilog? Wala. So why do we have to put it on the logo? Plebiscite dapat yan sa buong Thomasian Community.
