For a Higher Purpose

Nowadays, having a degree in Nursing and the letters RN appended after your name is like the golden ticket to the American dream - the promise of bounty, overflowing money, and the financial stability for both yourself and the your family.

It all sounds so tempting.

No wonder why a lot actually lay out their lives for this path by programming their fates to get deployed to some other part of the world as soon as they graduate. Just recently, my mom was telling me to go search the internet for a post-graduate scholarship abroad. This was after I told them my plan of taking up a Master’s degree in a field, other than Nursing. “But if you work abroad, the pay is bigger if you have a MA Nursing degree”, she said to me. But that is exactly the point! I do not see myself still being a nurse in the next ten years. Two or three years might good for experience more than that is quite too long already.

You know what I want to do?

Teach.

Teach. Like a college professor or a clinical instructor in some university. The thing is, I want to be of value to the society. I want to contribute and help develop the next generation of Filipinos, by imparting knowledge to dispel ignorance and apathy. To use what I have been blessed with to reach out to those in need and empower them to be productive citizens of this country, allowing them realize their own potential to help in the rebuilding of our nation.

I want to make use of myself, selflessly.

I know I’m writing like I’m running for public office right now but I just want to make it clear that I would prefer a career which rewards more than what could be written in a paycheck.

Is the idealism of the youth still to be blamed for such cause?

So much for the serious stuff. I would just like to share this vlog from my schoolmate, Anna Tan, who talks about the lighter, and not to mention, the humorous side of nursing. Enjoy! Subscribe to her, she’s really good. :)

  1. Teaching is a vocation. If you get the calling, go for it. :)

  3. Why, I happen to be in the academe myself. And there's really nothing quite like it. I've always believed that you just know it in your heart, if teaching's indeed for you. And the way you wrote about wanting to be doing it, sounds like you're a kindred spirit. And I doubt that it's just the idealism of youth talking. =)

  4. Ohhh...so Mr. Anoni guy is from the academe?haha :) Do you teach in UP?

Hay. Kaso I also have to consider ung finances. As you might know, di naman ganun kalaki ang pera sa academe and syempre I also have to have money to support my future family. But I really think, it's a very noble job:)
